How do you subtly, drop hints to your significant other on what type/kind/design of engagement ring you want?
If marriage is frequently discussed and is just around the corner, significant other has been dropping hints as well - like asking me where is the best jewelry store in the area who wouldn't rip you off, or catching him watching that reality TV about a guy looking for the right engagement ring - when the only reality TV he watches are survivor, amazing race and fear factor...

How do you subtly drop hints the kind/type/setting of engagement ring that you want?
I know he knows me well, especially my overall taste, and he has given me jewelry before, but buying me the right perfume or right bag is way different than buying a ring.
Or should I just let him be and let me be surprised?
You can't hint or be subtle about what you want with guys. Also if you leave it up to him, God only knows what he will come up with.
I say you just visit some jewelry websites to get an idea of what you want so you can be clear to him about what you like and what you are simply not fond of. So after you do that, the next time you and your boyfriend go to the mall, then you're bound to pass a store you already checked out online, so tell him you'd like to show him some rings you like. Show him your top 3, and don't leave without having the ring id numbers or "names" written down so he can remember. When you're online check out some wedding bands for him as well and check them out in the store too so he can see that he has options too 
Once he knows what you would like, then it's all a waiting game. You can mention it, but don't overtalk a propsoal ( like what I've been doing lately, eeeep) and it'll happen soon enough (I need to follow my own advice lol). Good luck! Have fun!
