Perfume And Cologne Basics

In the cutthroat world of design and manufacture of perfumes, perfume is a complex chemical mixture of essential oils, aromatic compounds, fixatives, solvents, beautiful and famous bottles approved for marketing. For those who wear perfume, the final product is much more than the sum of its parts: for many, the scent is a very dear part getting ready for the day, as essential as getting dressed or brushing one's teeth.

A quick tour of the section of cosmetics and personal care of any department store reveals the wide range of perfumes available on the market, with many more available exclusively through boutiques, high end perfumery or import stores. There are so many choices, in fact, to know what you should buy can be confusing.

Depending on their chemical composition and the proportion of fragrance oil, solvent odors generally fall into one of the following categories:

Extracts of Perfumes (20% to -40% aromatic compounds), eau de perfume (10% to -30% aromatic compounds), eau de toilette (5% of aromatic -20%) or cologne (2% of compounds -3% aromatic). The more aromatic compound used the longer the scent will last. The perfume is made up of dozens of ingredients, so it can be difficult to describe the overall effect just like a perfume. However, it is possible to identify different smells that help, similar to how you know that wine can taste the flavors of its composition.

Perfumes are generally classified by families such as free floral scent (motives), Spain (used to describe the aromas and apricot), Fougère (woody or herbaceous smells), (honey leather, snuff, or the smell of wood tar named because they are dominated aromas reminiscent of leather), wood (such as sandalwood, cedar, patchouli or-), Antwerp (aromas of vanilla or animals) and citrus (refreshing flavors).

"Notes" are another way to describe or classify the perfumes and the smell as it evaporates from the skin over a period of hours.

  • Top note: this is what is first noticed after applying the perfume. Top notes are usually nice and strong, but it evaporates quickly.
  • Middle notes: also called the "heart notes", a perfume's grade point average is considered the main body of a perfume, and tend to be less strong than top notes. Middle notes are visible from anywhere a few minutes to over an hour after application of perfume.
  • Base notes the lasting impressions of an application of perfume, base notes provide a fragrance of her depth, thanks to the retention capacity of the fasteners used in the manufacture of perfumes.

The creation of the art of perfume making is attributed to the Egyptians, but the scent has been embraced by the rest of the world, with uses as wide ranging as religious duty in some Islamic culture, to camouflage the lack of hygiene in Europe beginning, and even a slow absorption of venom! Today, however, the perfume is used by both men and women for personal enjoyment and appeal. Many consider a particular scent as part of their identity, and because of that loyalty, many popular Perfumes, such as Chanel No 5, have existed for nearly a century.

As beautiful as the perfume can be, many people are allergic to it, so I always make sure your scent of choice is not offensive to anyone before use in a busy area.
